これも日曜の昼下がり。古い作品や良作をやっているCinefilimagicaという映画専門チャンネルをつけたら、この映画をやっていて、途中から見たのですが、Natalie PortmanとDustin Hoffmanの演技に魅せられ最後まで見てしまいました。Zach Helm監督作品でタイトルはMr. Magorium’s Wonder Emporium (邦題「マゴリアムおじさんの不思議なおもちゃ屋」 2007年）。

Molly Mahoney is the awkward and insecure manager of Mr. Magorium’s Wonder Emporium, the strangest, most fantastic, most wonderful toy store in the world. But when Mr. Magorium, the 243 year-old eccentric who owns the store, bequeaths the store to her, a dark and ominous change begins to take over the once remarkable Emporium.

という一見子供向けなんですが、Dustin Hoffmanの演技が本当にすばらしく、最後に出て来るのが以下の珠玉の言葉です。

Mr. M: “When King Lear dies in act five, do you know what Shakespeare has written?  He’s written…”He dies.”  That’s all.  Nothing more.  No fan fair.  No metaphor.  No brilliant final words.  The culmination of the most influential work of dramatic literature is, “He dies”.  It takes Shakespeare, a genius, to come up with “He dies”.  And yet every time I read those two words, I find myself overwhelmed with disphorium.  And I know it’s only natural to be sad.  But not because of the words “He dies”, but because of the life we saw prior to those words.   I’ve lived a good, long life Mahoney.  and I’m not asking you to be happy that I must go, I’m only asking that you turn the page.  Continue reading.  And let the next story begin.  And, if anyone ever asks what became of me, you relate my life in all it’s wonder…and end it with a simple, and modest,… “He died”.

Mahoney: “I love you”.

Mr. M: “I love you too.  Your life is an occasion… rise to it!”

Mr. M: リア王が第５幕で死ぬ時シェイクスピアーはどう書いたか知っているかい？「彼は死んだ。」って書いたんだ。それだけ。それ以上何もない。何の華やかさもない。何のメタファーもない。すばらしい辞世の言葉もない。演劇文学の最高作品の頂点が「彼は死んだ」。「彼は死んだ」を持って来るなんてシェイクスピアーは天才だ。でもこのふたつの言葉を読むたびにちょっと気が済まないんだ。悲しくなるのは当然だ。でもそれは「彼は死んだ」という言葉のせいじゃなく、この言葉が出て来る前に見た彼の人生のせいで悲しいんだ。Mahoney,　私は長くていい人生を送ったんだ。私が逝ってしまうのを喜んでほしいと言ってるんじゃないんだ。ただ次のページを開いておくれと言ってるんだよ。読み続けるんだよ。次のストーリーを始めるんだ。もし誰かが私がどうなったかたずねたら、私の人生をあの不思議な出来事とつなげて、そしてシンプルで控えめな・・・「彼は死んだ」で結ぶんだ。

Mr. M: “I love you too.  人生はチャンスなんだ。機を逃さずつかみ取るんだ!

なんか私の日本語訳がつたなく、日本語にしてしまうとあの感動的な “Your life is an occasion, … rise to it!”の感じになりませんね。an occasionというのは英語では次のような意味が列記されています。

occasion

a particular time, especially as marked by certain circumstances or occurrences

a special or important time, event, ceremony, celebration

a convenient, favorable time, opportunity, or juncture

the immediate or incidental cause or reason for some action or result
