It will be Dawson’s xxth birthday tomorrow. エスタミネーは月曜がお休みなので、きのうの夕方その時間帯に一緒に居合わせた生徒さんたちとお祝いをしました。
３分違いの弟（つまり彼はtwinです！）がいるそうですが、一卵性でそっくりだそうですが、私はまだ会ったことがないので、この顔が二つ並んだことを想像するのが非常に難しいです。
お父さんもお母さんもこの時期誕生日だそうで、家族ではお祝いラッシュが続いていることでしょう。いつも楽しく素晴らしいクラスをしてくれてthank you very much, Dawson! Hope you’ll have a great day tomorrow!!

今年もHaunted House（お化け屋敷）があるそうですよ〜。あ〜、もう怖くなって来た〜！
これはAppleの1997年の最初のThink differentのコマーシャルで、Steve Jobsがナレーションをしたものでon airされることはなかったものです。俳優のRichard Dreyfussがナレーションをしたものが実際はon airになりました。Dreyfussのもいいんですが、わたしはやはりこのSteve Jobsの方が心にぐっときていいなと思います。
Here’s to the crazy ones: the misfits, the rebels, the troublemakers, the round pegs in the square holes.
The ones who see things differently.
They’re not fond of rules and they have no respect for the status quo.
You can quote them, disagree with them, glorify or vilify them.
But the only thing you can’t do is ignore them because they change things.
They push the human race forward.
While some may see them as the crazy ones, we see genius because the people who are crazy enough to think they can change the world are the ones who do.
クレージーな（ちょっと変わった）人たちへ：まわりの環境になじめない人、反逆者、トラブルメーカー、四角い穴の丸い釘。
物事を違うように考える人。
彼らはルールが 嫌いで、現状を無視する。
彼らを引き合いに出してもいいし、反対していもいい、あるいは讃えてもいいしけなしてもいい。
ただたった一つできないのはその人たちを無視することだ。というのは彼らは物事を変えるからだ。
彼らは人類を進化させる。
ある者は彼らをクレージーなやつらと見なすかもしれないが、我々は天才だと思っている。なぜなら自分が世界を変えることができると考えるほどクレージーな人たちは本当に世界を変えるからだ。
ついにこの日が来ました。彼は逝ってしまいました。
以前にも紹介しましたが、彼のStamford Universityの学位授与式でのspeech（何度も授業で使っていますが）は、自分が到達した心境をダイレクトに学生に伝えています。「人は死から避けられない。だから自分の信念に従って生きてください。自分がやりたいことが見つからないなら、あきらめないで探し続けて。」
アメリカに住んでいるときに”Live a full life”とよく言われていました。物事をさっさとやらなずにぎりぎりのところまで行動を起こさない私は、この言葉を横目で見ていた感じで全く行動力がなく人生の半分以上を無駄にしていました。アメリカの人は本当に行動力がある人が多く人生を積極的に謳歌しているように当時の私には見えました。そしてSteve Jobsはまさにfull lifeを生きたお手本のような人です。
ずいぶん前に同時通訳の授業を受けているときに、スピーチ・コミュニケーション学者で日本の同時通訳の草分けである故斉藤美津子教授が、”You have to have the determination！”と、物事をなそうとするときには”determination”、つまり「やろう、やりとげよう、という強い意志」を持たねばならないということをおっしゃいました。これは、私が今しっかり受け継いで生徒さんたちによく言う言葉です。
Steve Jobsは本当に”strong determination”を持って実行した類いまれな才能を持った人でした。そして世界中の様々な人の生活を楽しく素晴らしいものにしました。テクノロジーとアートを融合させ、スタイリッシュで機能的でリーズナブルな価格のプロダクトの数々。そして最終的には消費者が持ちたいと思うものを次から次に開発し続けるという偉業を成し遂げました。
出生直後に養子に出され、大学は中退、２０歳で起こした会社が１０年後には大企業になるも理事会から解雇され、Pixarのアニメ映画で大成功し、NeXTという会社も設立し現在のMacのベースになるコンピューターのwebサーバーなどを開発して成功し、AppleがNeXTを買収、Appleに戻ることになるという彼の人生もアップアンッダウンがあり全てがバラ色の道ではなかったことも多くの人の共感を得るかもしれません。その人生に一貫しているのが彼の強い”determination”です。
彼が気に入っていたという言葉は、”I skate to where the puck is going to be, not where it has been.”

Steve Jobs seems to know what we wanted before we knew it ourselves.
In 1981, long before most people had ever touched a personal computer, he told CBS News he was certain computers would become an essential part of our lives.
It’s not gonna happen at once. It’s just gonna be very gradual and very human and seduce you into learning how to use it.
He started building his computers in his parents’ garage. Founding Apple in 1976 at the age of 21. At the time, when operating a computer was anything but simple, his goal was to build a machine for everyone.
In 1984, Apple boldly announced its first Macintosh with an ad promising the freedom from convention. The sleek design and ease of use led the way in making computing mainstream.
Innovations really are driving the technology right in the center of our lives.
In 2001, Jobs brought us the iPod changing the way we buy and listen to music.
I think if you actually see one of these things, you will be blown away with how beautiful it is and how thin it is.
Apple was no longer just a computer company. It’s online iTune Store, was on its way to becoming the world’s biggest music retailer and Jobs seemed to rebel in his role in the music industry leader. But Jobs wasn’t finished shaking up established industries. Cell phones were next with the introduction in 2007 of the first iPhone.
iPhone is like having your life in your pocket. It’s the ultimate digital device.
In 2010, he unveiled the iPad and tablet computers became the next big thing.
It’s so much more intimate than a laptop and it’s so much more capable than a smart phone.
Jobs had a liver transplant in 2009, but barely slowed down. Just after the second medical leave in early 2011, he sat next to President Obama at the dinner with Silicon Valley’s top leaders and the ailing Jobs was still looking far into the future when he appeared at the Cupertino City Council meeting to unveil plans for Apple’s new headquarters.
It’s pretty amazing building. Jobs dedication to style and design made Apple’s products, from computers to smartphones, the standard other manufacturers often imitated had seldom matched.

In the summer of 2011 by stock market value, Apple passed Exxon to become the most valuable company in the world. Even as his health deteriorated, Steve Jobs seems as competitive as ever, always pushing to keep Apple at the top.
