ちょうど一年前の３月にカナダに留学された医療関係のTさん。カナダはアメリカとまた違い行く寸前まで書類などがそろわずいろいろと気を揉みましたが、全てが揃って出国したのがついきのうのようです。本当に一年ってあっという間ですね。

One of my students, a medical professional, left for Canada for a research a year ago March. It seems like only yesterday that we were communicating back and forth with the university. Well, as I always say that the time passes so quickly.

留学先の大学では本当に日本とは違う様々なことを経験されたようで、盛りだくさんの一年間だったとのこと。

She has done so much at the university in a very different environment.

最後の数か月は論文書きに追われ、何度も書き直しやっとOKがでたそうで、これからも英語論文にどんどん挑戦していくそうです。

She was quite busy writing and revising her paper in the final months. She is very willing to write more research papers in English in the near future.

向こうでのことをいろいろ話してくださいましたが、印象に残っているのが、「向こうの病院では医師と他の医療プロフェッショナルが対等」ということ。これはアメリカの医療機関で働いたことがある人はみんな言っていますね。日本はやはりドクターが頂点にいる感じなんですかね〜。

She told me many things happened there. One of the things she said was that the doctors and other medical professionals at the hospital are equal, which I have heard many times. Everyone who has worked in a US hospital says the same thing. I suppose in Japan the doctors are on top of the pyramid.

それから、「羞恥心がなくなった！」とも言っています。なんかよくわかります。とにかく相手に気圧されず毎日毎日自分を前に出していかなければならない世界ですから、「これ言ったら気を悪くするかな〜」とか「あんなこと言って私恥ずかしい」なんて段じゃなくなりますよね。

She also says that she got bolder, or rather she is not as shy or hesitant as before. I completely understand this as I had gone through this as well. You must be proactive over there every day without being intimidated. It is no use for you to think like “Will he feel bad if I say this…?” or”I am so embarrassed saying such things.”

プロとしてのお仕事の他にも、街中を散策したり、旅に出たり本当に実り多い駆け足の一年間でした。そしてプロ集団との新しい公私のネットワークもできたことでしょう。

Her professional life aside, she has enjoyed her daily life there going to the cafes and restaurants with her friends and traveled here and there. She must have a new network of professional friends.

この一年を糧に本当にさらなる飛躍をしてくれそうなTさんです。楽しみ楽しみ❤️

This experience will for sure make her more motivated and successful personally and professionally.

３月の末に高校を卒業し大学に進学する生徒さんたちとお別れの会をしました。すでに彼の地へ出発している人もいて全員ではありませんでしたが、ちびちびの頃から来ている生徒さんたち、本当に毎年この季節は嬉し悲しです。

We had a small gathering with some students who graduated high school last month. Some could not join as they had already left Nagasaki. Most of them have been coming to Estaminet English School since they were little. I feel happy for their graduation, but at the same time I feel sad to see them go.

共通するのはみんなのキラキラした目。あの過酷な高校３年生を終えた開放感。人生の次の段階へ行くって本当にわくわくすること。私も十分おすそ分けしてもらいました。大阪に行く人とは向こうで再開することを約束。英語の次のステップへ招待したいと思っています。

One thing I always witness in those students is their shining eyes with lots of happiness, hope and expectations. After going through a hard year of studying, they must feel so free. It’s always exciting to go to the next chapter of your life. Thank you very much for sharing that with me. I am inviting some of those going to Osaka to join me studying the next level of English there.

みんな存分にこれからの人生を楽しんでね〜。そして英語は絶対にあなたたちの人生の味方になりますから、これからも勉強続けて世界に飛び出してね〜。

今日はあいにくの曇り空。朝は土砂降りでしたが、今年もエスタミネーの前の桜はしっかり咲いてくれました。

Well it rained quite hard this morning and it’s still cloudy, but we can enjoy the view of so many cherry blossoms from our office. How beautiful!!

今年もSXSW(サウスバイサウスウエスト）の季節になりました。今まさに、テキサス州オースティンの町は熱気と興奮につつまれています。このフェスティバルはもともと地元オースティンのミュージシャンたちがその多様な音楽をアメリカ中に広めようとして1987年に700人の観客（当事者は350人くらいが来ると思っていた）で始まったのです。音楽だけでなく、映画やIT企業、各界の著名人のスピーチ、などインタラクティブなフェスティバルとなって今や全米どころか、世界中の注目を集めています。今年は１０万人が参加しているそうです。私も今すぐ行きた〜い！

Well, the humble music festival SXSW started back in 1987 in Austin,Texas, by a group of musicians who wanted to spread the local eclectic music nationwide, is now a giant event of interactive festival of music, film, technology, keynote speeches, etc. attracting thousands of people from around the world. Probably named after the Hitchcock’s famous movie “North by Northwest.” James Blunt was discovered here after singing in front of only 15 people and got the music license contract on the day with a music producer who was in the audience. John Mayer also gained fame from here. Bruce Springsteen said in a keynote speech some years ago, “This is the beating heart of the nation.”

本当に今すぐ行きた〜い！確実にこの２〜３年のうちには行くようにしたいイベントのひとつですね。日本でも学際的なものが徐々に広がりつつありますが、アメリカは本当にスケールが違う！TEDに代表されるように、いろんな質のいいものに間口を開けていて、それが新人であろうがベテランであろうが、同じようなチャンスを得ることができます。昔は音楽は音楽で、別の分野とは融合していなかったんですが、このようにテクノロジーや医療、IT、教育、アートなど様々な分野や同じ場所で同じときに開かれ誰でも参加できるなんて、なんて素晴らしいんでしょう！

I love this sort of inspiring events. Whenever I go back to LA, I feel this sort of vive which I miss greatly here in Nagasaki. I will definitely plan to join this event within a couple of years.
